“I lived and worked in France for a number of years. And my love for the country and its people has never gone away. I often hear people say: ‘France is such a great country, just a pity about all the French.’ This is something that makes me cringe. The fact that the French are so misunderstood really pains me. This is so often the attitude, even though France offers many business opportunities.
We’re talking about France here, but this actually applies to a lot of other countries too. If we were to engage more with each other, there would be a lot less frustration. After all, the world out there offers greater opportunities, greater enjoyment and greater profitability.

“I lived and worked in Belgium for more than 10 years. And for more than 5 years, I spent a lot of time in Germany working with 200 German colleagues. These experiences gave me the opportunity to learn the languages and cultures of both these countries. This was a highly educational period in my life, and I still benefit from it every day now.
During this period, I also experienced cultural differences for myself. I noticed that these differences are often perceived as annoying and frequently cause misunderstandings and frustration. It’s a great shame, because I actually experienced the great joy that intercultural cooperation can bring. If only we did our best to connect and bridge our differences.

“Working internationally is extremely fascinating and motivating. Being in contact with people from different countries every day, speaking several languages and bridging the gap between those cultures is very rewarding.
From an early age I have been captured by the French language and culture. The many summers in France strengthened my desire to learn to speak French. After living there for a while, the soft spot I had for the country developed even more. It was clear to me: I want to do something with this!
The international aspect is also reflected in my private life. My girlfriend is Portuguese, but she grew up in Flanders. Together we lived in Antwerp for a while and I started working in Belgium. Every year we travel to Portugal to visit her family.
No matter how close we may be to each other in Europe, the differences between countries, or even within national borders, are often enormous. If you are aware of that, you will have a different perspective and can start a conversation with an open mind.
